The Spanish National Honor Society (SNHS) at Christian Academy of Louisville recently attended the Kentucky State Convention.

Eight members of the CAL SNHS met with more than 200 students from the state of Kentucky, representing over 50 Kentucky chapters, to socialize, demonstrate leadership, and develop proficiency with the Spanish language as they participate in the variety of activities in the sessions.

“It was a wonderful experience for our students to find common ground with other Spanish students,” according to SNHS sponsor Beth Watts.  “As they mingled with others, and conversed with native speakers, their confidence with the language increased, and they realized that they really did know a lot of Spanish!”

The students attended six separate sessions that varied from cooking classes to conversation with native speakers in small groups. The keynote speaker was a Georgetown College Spanish Professor, Dr. Adela Borrallo Solís (from Spain) who also encouraged the students to better understand cultures of Spanish-speaking countries through the study of history and literature.

Students also had the opportunity to compete for one of three scholarships being offered. Only two students from each school were allowed to compete, and the criteria was to take a 40-minute spontaneous writing essay, followed by an impromptu speaking exam with a native speaker and three silent proctors, who were assessing the proficiency of the student.

Congratulations to Chelsey Jackson, who was one of the three scholarship winners.

“Our students returned from the convention with a renewed passion for the language, and an increased confidence of the skills, but a little regret that some did not run for office this year,” said Watts. The state convention will be held in Louisville next year.

The CAL Spanish National Honor Society was inducted as a chapter in November 2009.
