CAI Academic Overviews

Curriculum

The curriculum of Christian Academy of Indiana presents a traditional academic program taught from a Biblical perspective with concentrated emphasis on reading, writing and math proficiency. Instruction is also provided for all students in Science, Social Studies, Music, Art, Technology, Physical Education, and Media Research.

Christian Education
Daily Christian education classes and weekly chapel programs are offered to promote a love for the Lord Jesus Christ, wholesome attitudes and mature Christian behavior, as well as a Christian worldview. Service projects are also coordinated throughout the school to set an example of serving.

Elementary School Academic Overview
Kindergarten
The kindergarten curriculum is centered around building readiness skills in writing, number concepts and phonetic reading. Kindergartners experience a variety of situations from structured seat work to hands-on, activity-based learning. Coordinating activities include language, science, music, social studies, art, and large motor development.. Bible instruction includes verse memorization and Bible stories as well as the application of Christian principles in the classroom and the world beyond.

Grade 1
The first grade curriculum includes the development of fundamental understanding and skills in the following areas: reading and phonics, math (addition, subtraction, number concepts, place value, money and time), language (expression and form), spelling, writing, science and social studies. Art, music, health and physical activities are a part of the weekly schedule. Bible truths and a prayerful lifestyle are taught and modeled every day. Special activities include the ACSI Spelling Bee and Young Author's Competition.

Grade 2
The second grade curriculum places a strong emphasis on reading skill development (comprehension skills, identifying word families, creative analysis and practice of phonetic skills). Math instruction includes the acquisition of addition facts, subtraction, borrowing, simple multiplication and division, measuring and counting money among other skills. Language, Bible, spelling, social studies, science, computer, art, music, health and physical activities are also included at this level. Special activities include the ACSI Spelling Bee and Young Author's Competition.

Grade 3
Reading comprehension skills are stressed in third grade. Students are to master multiplication and division facts, work long division and multiplication problems, understand place value, and become competent in completing word problems. Language studies include experiences in letter writing, creative writing, capitalization, punctuation, and parts of speech. The weekly memorization of spelling words incorporates about 1,000 commonly used words. Social Studies traces U.S. history through the lives of famous Americans and study of our community. Cursive writing skills are developed in the third grade. Bible, science, computer and art instruction enhance learning at this level. Special activities include choir, the ACSI Spelling Bee and Young Author's Competition.

Grade 4
Reading for comprehension, understanding basic mathematical operations, using correct grammar and increasing vocabulary are of primary importance in fourth grade. Students practice skills in capitalization and punctuation and spend time developing writing skills. Study of Indiana history, basic geography, science, computer, Bible, music and art are integral parts of the curriculum. Students learn basic concepts to promote a healthy lifestyle and participate in physical activities. New understanding is gained in accepting independent responsibility. Special activities include choir, the ACSI Spelling Bee and Young Author's Competition.


Grade 5
Fifth grade focuses on reading comprehension, building vocabulary, and understanding basic functions with whole numbers, fractions and decimals. American history, language skill development, science, Bible, music, art, penmanship, health, computer and physical activity are also a part of the fifth grade. Students participate in spelling, writing and science fair competitions at this level, as well as special band activities, a parade of Nations and Junior Achievement Exchange City.

Middle School Academic Overview
Sixth grade emphasizes reading comprehension and vocabulary, parts of speech and grammar, basic mathematical operations with whole numbers and fractions, and money management. History and science instruction includes an examination of how God has moved in these areas. Other subject areas in the sixth grade include: Bible, computer, art, physical education, and band/choral. Students continue their experiences in creative writing, spelling, geography and science fair competition at the sixth grade level.

Seventh grade focuses on developing Christ-like characteristics which is emphasized in seventh grade Bible class. Students continue refining their skills in creative writing, oral presentations, grammar, reading comprehension and vocabulary. Basic mathematical operations include whole numbers, using variables, geometry, solving equations and more. Seventh graders also study world geography, science, computer, physical education, health, art, band and chorus. Students participate in spelling, geography, writing and either science fair or cultural project competitions.

Eighth grade continues to refine skills in writing, speaking, reading and vocabulary. At this level, the students have either pre-algebra or Algebra 1. High school credit will be awarded to eighth grade students who take Algebra I, band or a foreign language. The students do an in-depth study of American history and how God moved in bringing about our homeland. Other subject areas are science, computer, physical education, Bible, Spanish I, finance, art and band or chorus. Students participate in spelling, writing, geography and science competitions, and visit the Junior Achievement Finance Park.
